Set Intentions, Not Resolutions

Every year when the New Year comes rolling around, we set resolutions for ourselves to change in one-way or another. It’s probably because the new year represents a clean slate to start over.

And whether it be mind, body, or spirit, we always set goals for ourselves with the intention to reach them.

So I’m taking it upon myself to change my resolutions into intentions, and actually try to reach them. This way I’m not trying to change myself completely, but I'm intending to grow more as a person.

1. Enjoy More Time with Friends

This only feels right to be my first because after this year I will finally graduate college. And as sad as it is to say, I probably won’t see more than half these people again- yikes.

So I intend to spend more time with the people I care for most, rather than staying in and binge watching whatever Netflix series I’m hooked on.

2. Read More

With me being a journalist and all I feel like I shouldn’t have this on my list, but I do. The hard part isn’t reading, obviously, but it’s being able to find the right book I’ll actually enjoy and stick to.

I intend to finish reading my current book, “Big Magic, Beyond Creative Living,” (which is so inspiring and I highly recommend it) and then quickly scurry off to find the next!

(p.s. if you have any suggestions don’t hesitate to let me know!)

3. Do New Things

This is such a vast topic but I have things I want to try and do for this new year. First is to be more open and welcoming to new people. I’m kind of closed off at first and my friends and family can vouch for that. Whoops. Another is go hiking in the snow, maybe go on some blind dates, and who knows, the world is my oyster now.

Plus, in the summer I will be going abroad alone for the first time ever and I intend to try so many new things. Like learning how to tango and most importantly becoming as fluent as I can in Spanish.

4. Live a Balanced Life

Now this is probably going to be my hardest yet, but why not go for some big change this year- am I right?! Over the years I’ve developed an unhealthy habit where the number on the scale controls my life and has even restricted me from doing things.

But I intend to bite that in the butt and take back control of my life. There are always going to be bad days, but it’s up to me to say goodbye to those negative thoughts and move on. This year is my year of change for balance between my health, fitness goals, and relationships.
